Test Description
This test measures the concentration of metanephrines in your urine over a 24-hour period. Metanephrines are formed when your body breaks down hormones called catecholamines, such as epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine.
Indications of the Test
You may need this test if your doctor suspects you have a condition called pheochromocytoma or paraganglioma—rare tumors that secrete excessive amounts of catecholamines.
Patient Preparation/Instructions
Do not consume caffeinated drinks for 2 days before the test and on the test day. Avoid physical or emotional stress, certain medications, and foods that could increase metanephrine levels. Follow your doctor’s guidelines closely.
Typical Reference Values for Metanephrines
Normal ranges for adults are typically less than 400 micrograms (µg) per 24 hours.
Turn Around Time
Results usually take 3 to 6 days to complete.
