Test Description
The Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) test is a screening test for syphilis. It measures substances (proteins) called antibodies that are present in the blood of people who may have the disease. The test is used to screen people who have symptoms of sexually transmitted infections and is routinely used to see how treatment for syphilis is working. After treatment with antibiotics, the levels of syphilis antibodies should fall, and these levels can be monitored with another RPR test.
Indications of the Test
The RPR test is used for the following purposes:
- Screening for syphilis in individuals with symptoms of sexually transmitted infections.
- Routine monitoring of syphilis treatment progress.
- Screening pregnant women for syphilis.
- High-risk groups, such as sex workers, males who have sex with males, or adult prisoners.
Patient Preparation/Instructions
No special preparation is usually needed for the RPR test.
Typical Reference Values
The RPR test measures antibodies that are present in the blood of someone who has syphilis. The test is most sensitive (almost 100%) during the middle (secondary and latent) stages of syphilis and is less sensitive during the early (primary) and late (tertiary) stages of the infection.
Turn Around Time
The turn around time for the RPR test is typically 2-3 weeks.
