Mycoplasma Genitalium Test

The Mycoplasma genitalium test is a molecular diagnostic assay designed to detect the presence of Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) DNA in urine or genital swab samples. Mycoplasma genitalium  (MG for short) is a sexually transmitted bacterium that infects the urogenital tract and is a recognized cause of urethritis in men and cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women. This test utilizes nucleic acid amplification techniques (such as PCR/NAAT) to provide a highly sensitive and specific diagnosis, even in asymptomatic individuals.

Indications of theMycoplasma Genitalium Test

This test is recommended for:

  • Individuals with symptoms of urethritis (burning urination, discharge) or cervicitis (abnormal vaginal discharge, bleeding, pelvic pain)

  • Patients with persistent or recurrent symptoms after treatment for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as chlamydia or gonorrhea

  • Sexual partners of individuals diagnosed with Mycoplasma genitalium

  • Patients with risk factors for STIs, including multiple sexual partners or unprotected sex

  • Evaluation of unexplained pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or infertility

Patient Preparation/Instructions

  • For urine samples: Do not urinate for at least one hour before sample collection. Collect the first part of the urine stream (first-catch urine) in the provided container.

  • For women: A vaginal or endocervical swab may be collected by a healthcare professional. Avoid using vaginal creams, douches, or medications for at least 24 hours prior to sample collection.

  • For men: A urethral swab or urine sample may be required.

  • Refrain from sexual intercourse for 24 hours prior to sample collection if possible.

  • Follow any additional instructions provided by the laboratory or your healthcare provider.

Typical Reference Values

  • Negative: No Mycoplasma genitalium DNA detected.

  • Positive: Mycoplasma genitalium DNA detected, indicating current infection.

Turn Around Time

  • Results are typically available within 2–5 business days from receipt of the sample at the laboratory.
