Test Description
The HPV DNA Test, also known as the human papillomavirus test, is a screening test that detects the presence of high-risk strains of the HPV virus in cervical cells. These high-risk strains are associated with an increased risk of developing cervical cancer.
The test is often performed as part of a routine Pap smear to screen for the presence of the HPV virus. A positive result does not indicate the presence of cancer but alerts healthcare providers to monitor the patient closely for the development of cervical cancer
Patient Preparation/Instructions
There are no specific dietary or medication restrictions for the HPV test. It is recommended to schedule the test when you are not menstruating, as blood can interfere with the test results. Additionally, it is advised to avoid douching, using tampons, or engaging in sexual intercourse 48 hours before the test
Typical Reference Values
The test results are reported as either positive or negative. A positive result indicates the presence of high-risk HPV strains, while a negative result means that these strains were not found in the sample.
Turnaround Time
The results of the HPV test are typically available within a few weeks. However, the exact turnaround time may vary depending on the laboratory or healthcare provider
