Fasting Blood Sugar

Test Description

Fasting blood sugar is a blood test that measures the amount of glucose in the blood after an overnight fast. It is used to diagnose diabetes and prediabetes, as well as to monitor blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.

Indications of the Test

A fasting blood sugar level of less than 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L) is considered normal. A level between 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L) indicates prediabetes, and a level of 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L) or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes.

Patient Preparation/Instructions

Patients are required to fast for 8-10 hours before the test, which means no food or drink except water. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of any medications they are taking, as some medications can affect blood sugar levels.

Typical Reference Values

The expected values for normal fasting blood glucose concentration are between 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L) and 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L).

Turnaround Time

The turnaround time for a fasting blood sugar test is usually within a day or two.
