Microalbumin Test Description
A microalbumin test is a urine test that measures the amount of albumin, a type of protein, in your urine. It is used to detect small amounts of albumin that may not be found in a regular urine test.
Indications of the Test
The microalbumin test is recommended if you have diabetes or high blood pressure, as these conditions can damage the kidneys over time. It is also used to screen for kidney disease in people with a family history of kidney problems or those who belong to ethnic groups with a higher risk of kidney disease.
Patient Preparation/Instructions
No special preparation is needed for this test. You can eat and drink normally before providing a urine sample.
Typical Reference Values
- Normal: Less than 30 mg of albumin per gram of creatinine (mg/g)
- Microalbuminuria: 30 to 300 mg/g
- Overt proteinuria: Greater than 300 mg/g
Turn Around Time
Results are typically available within 24 to 72 hours, depending on the laboratory.
