Test Description
Vibrio Cholera Culture is used in the isolation and identification of Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 or O139 by culture of a stool specimen and remains the gold standard for the laboratory diagnosis of cholera. The selective thiosulfate–citrate–bile salts agar (TCBS) is ideal for isolation and identification[1].
Indications of the Test
This test is used to diagnose cholera in patients with acute watery diarrhoea, especially in areas where access to diagnostic laboratory testing is limited[1].
Patient Preparation/Instructions
Cary Blair media is ideal for transport, and the selective thiosulfate–citrate–bile salts agar (TCBS) is ideal for isolation and identification[1].
Typical Reference Values
The presence of a single V.cholerae bacterium is significant.
Turn around Time
Culture of V. Cholera takes 3-5 days
