Test Description
The Hepatitis C antibody test, also known as the anti-HCV test, is a blood test that detects antibodies to the hepatitis C virus (HCV).
When HCV enters the body, it triggers the immune system to produce antibodies.
These antibodies typically become detectable in the blood approximately 12 weeks after exposure.
The test identifies these antibodies, providing a binary result: positive (indicating exposure) or negative (indicating no exposure).
Indications of the Hepatitis C Antibody Test
In Kenya, Health authorities recommend hepatitis C testing for:-
- All adults aged 18 and older at least once in their lifetime.
- Pregnant women during each pregnancy.
- People with risk factors such as:
- Current or past injection drug use.
- HIV infection.
- Abnormal liver function tests.
- History of blood transfusions or organ transplants before July 1992.
- Health care workers exposed to HCV-positive blood.
Patient Preparation/Instructions
No special preparation is needed before taking the Hepatitis C antibody test. However, it is advisable to inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking or any recent illnesses.
Typical Reference Values
- Negative Result: Indicates no current infection with HCV. If you suspect recent exposure (within the last six months), retesting may be necessary.
- Positive Result: Indicates previous exposure to HCV. Follow-up testing for HCV RNA is required to determine if the virus is currently active.
Turn Around Time
Results from the Hepatitis C antibody test typically take a few hours. Rapid tests may provide results in approximately 1 to 2 hours.
