Test Description
The Bordetella Pertussis Antibody Test measures the levels of IgA and IgM antibodies in the blood, which are produced by the body’s immune system in response to exposure or infection with Bordetella pertussis, the causative agent of whooping cough[5].
This test is a type of immunoassay that utilises the ELISA technique
Indications of the Test
The test is used to detect antibodies produced by the body’s immune system in response to exposure or infection with Bordetella pertussis[5]. It is particularly useful for diagnosing pertussis in patients with acute infection, as IgG, IgM, and IgA antibodies to fimbrial agglutinogens are expected to develop[2].
Patient Preparation/Instructions
There is no specific patient preparation required for this test. However, it is essential to provide a sufficient volume of serum (2 mL minimum) in a red-top tube or gel-barrier tube[2].
Typical Reference Values
The Bordetella Pertussis Antibody Test results are interpreted as follows[1]:
– IgA: 0.9 IV or less: Negative, no significant level of detectable Bordetella pertussis IgA antibody. 1.0-1.1 IV: Equivocal, repeat testing in 10-14 days may be helpful. 1.2 IV or greater: Positive, IgA antibody to Bordetella pertussis detected.
– IgM: The test is typically performed by ELISA, and a value of 1.2 IV or greater indicates a positive result[1].
Turnaround Time
The expected turnaround time for this test is 1-5 days[2].
