The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) is a diagnostic test that evaluates how your body processes sugar by measuring blood glucose levels before and after consuming a glucose solution.

It is commonly used to screen for or diagnose diabetes, including type 2 diabetes.

OGTT test is especially useful in the evaluation, screening and diagnosis of diabetes during pregnancy (Gestational Diabetes Mellitus -GDM)

Indications of the OGTT Test

– Screening for diabetes, prediabetes, impaired glucose tolerance
– Diagnosing type 2 diabetes
– Detecting gestational diabetes
– Assessing insulin resistance

Test Procedure

  • The oral glucose test depends on measuring your blood sugar levels at 30-minute intervals after swallowing a known quantity of glucose solution. This is usually 75g or 100g in pregnancy.
  • The blood sugar are measured by fingerprick blood at time 0min, 30min, 1hr, 1hr 30min, and 2hr mark
  • The measured blood sugar values are compared with expected normal values to determine any abnormality.

Patient Preparation/Instructions

Fasting: Fast for at least 8 hours before the test (overnight fasting).
Medications: Inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking.
Activities: Avoid smoking and strenuous exercise before the test.
Follow Instructions: Adhere to any specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider.

Typical Reference Values (mmol/L) for OGTT Test

Fasting: Greater than 7 mmol/L indicates diabetes.
2-Hour Post-Glucose Load
– Normal: Less than 7.8 mmol/L (140 mg/dL)
– Impaired Glucose Tolerance: 7.8-11 mmol/L (140-199 mg/dL)
– Diabetes: 11.1 mmol/L or higher (200 mg/dL)
