Test Description
The disseminated intravascular coagulation DIC screen is a panel of blood tests used to diagnose DIC, a serious condition characterized by abnormal blood clotting throughout the body’s small blood vessels.
Components of DIC Screens
- D-Dimer,
- Complete Blood Count (CBC),
- International Normalised Ratio (INR),
- Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT),
- Fibrinogen
- Antithrombin III
Indications for the Test
The DIC screen is ordered when DIC is suspected, often in patients with underlying conditions that can trigger DIC such as sepsis, cancer, trauma, or obstetric complications. Symptoms that may prompt testing include unexplained bleeding, bruising, or evidence of organ damage from small blood clots.
Patient Preparation/Instructions
No special patient preparation is required. The blood sample can be collected at any time.
Typical Reference Values
There is no single diagnostic test for DIC. Instead, the diagnosis is made based on a combination of the following results:
– Platelet count: 150-400 k/μL (may be decreased in DIC)
– Prothrombin time (PT): 11-15 seconds (may be prolonged in DIC)
– Activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT): 25-35 seconds (may be prolonged in DIC)
– Fibrinogen: 200-400 mg/dL (may be decreased in DIC)
– D-dimer: <0.5 μg/mL FEU (may be elevated in DIC)
Turnaround Time
The DIC screen results are typically available within 4-5 business days.
